Financial Aid

Education...

An Investment in Children

Families that are looking for quality education often consider private schools.  They are also aware of the costs, and many parents are justifiably concerned about their ability to afford private education.  At Riverstone International School we work with families to make this educational opportunity a reality.  Whether pursuing financial aid grants or taking advantage of payment options, families find realistic ways to make an investment in their children's future.

What is financial aid?

Financial aid is assistance provided by the school to reduce the cost of a private education.  Financial aid grants are based on financial need and do not have to be repaid.  Riverstone International School (RIS) seeks foundation grants and other gifts to assist students of promise, to promote student diversity, and to retain students whose families encounter unexpected financial difficulties.  While the school cannot meet all needs, last year 17% of all Riverstone students received some financial assistance.

Does applying for financial aid influence admission decisions?

Decisions regarding admission to the school and eligibility for financial aid are made independently.  Applying for financial aid does not influence the student's admission decision.  Families needing financial aid are encouraged to apply.

How does a family apply for aid?

Parents will need to complete the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) and send the original form directly to School and Student Service (SSS) in Pittsburgh, PA.  A photocopy of the SSS form should also be sent to RIS along with photocopies of signed 2006 and 2007 Forms 1040, including all schedules and Forms W-2.  All such documents are held in the strictest confidence and will be destroyed when no longer needed.

How is a family's need determined?

School and Student Service (SSS) analyzes the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) and sends a report to the school recommending the maximum amount the family can contribute to their child's educational expenses.  Using the SSS recommendation as a guideline, RIS determines financial assistance awards based on the number of families needing assistance and the resources available to meet those needs.  Individual family circumstances, such as income, assets, liabilities, family size, and the number of siblings in tuition-charging schools or colleges, are always considered.

What are general RIS financial aid policies?

The school's resources are limited; therefore, we ask all families to contribute as much as possible toward the cost of tuition.  This amount is determined by the policies and procedures of both SSS and RIS.

A student enrolling at RIS who receives financial aid will generally continue to receive aid as long as the family's financial need is demonstrated.  Parents must reapply for financial aid with SSS and RIS every year, and annual financial aid awards may be adjusted based on changes in family financial circumstances.

In cases of divorce or separation, both natural parents are required to apply.  The review process will take into consideration the financial resources of both custodial and non-custodial households, including parents' new spouses.

Student recipients of financial aid are expected to meet and maintain the same academic and disciplinary standards as all other students in the school.  Recipients of financial aid are never identified in any way.

Riverstone International School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its admissions, financial aid, employment, educational policies, or other school programs.
