Meet the Seniors

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Our Second Annual Meet the Seniors event was held last Friday. Students shared where they were going to college, what their extended essay topic was, and a little about their Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) projects. What was most moving was hearing how Riverstone has shaped each of their lives.

We will miss this wonderful group of students next year but wish them all the best as they move onto college. In the meantime, however, they start their IB exams this week!

Thanks to Rebecca Wood and the Parents’ Association for organizing this event.

Music 4 Music

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

This evening’s benefit concert, Music 4 Music, to raise funds for Riverstone’s first recording studio was a huge success! Everyone had a great time listening to Riverstone’s finest musicians. For our soon-to-be graduates, this was their last performance in front of the Riverstone community.

Thanks to everyone who participated including our performers, guests, grill masters, set up and clean up crew, sound guys, and MC’s, as well as raffle donors Mark Utting, Frank Martinez, and Jay Nelson!

Special thanks to Tiara W and Cat C, our students who instigated and coordinated this event with help from music teacher Alison Steven!

Thanks to Karla Haun and Debbi Wallace for sharing their photos.

Poverty Simulation

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Riverstone Grade 9 students recently hosted a very powerful Poverty Simulation, in conjunction with the 9th graders from the Community School in Ketchum and volunteers from the United Way of Treasure Valley. Over 60 participants were cast as family members facing a number of stressful challenges including job loss, homelessness, and other harsh realities of poverty. Reflecting on the simulation and presentation which followed, students remarked that they found it very moving and eye-opening.

Thanks to Laurel Carignan for spearheading the efforts to organize this event.

Preschoolers Doing Their Part for Earth Day

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

They may be tiny in stature, but our Preschool class continues to remind us in a big way that we all play a part in keeping the Earth healthy. Here they are on Earth Day cleaning up the edges of the playground and field.

Thank you Preschoolers!

Origami Cranes Grace Elementary School Entrance

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

As you can see, Riverstone students have been busy making origami cranes representing a wish for speedy recovery and good health for the people of Japan. To date, they have raised over $300 to send to Happy Hearts Fund (HHF), a non-profit foundation dedicated to improving children’s lives through educational and sustainable programs in natural disaster areas. We will be able to designate our funds as specifically aiding Japan. Since inception, HHF programs have benefited more than 31,000 children and 334,000 community members. Visit their website for more information.

Thank you to Parker B for initiating this great idea and Grade 4 for making signs and coordinating the sale of the origami paper. Your enthusiasm was contagious!

Grade 4 Visits Idaho Capitol

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Kerry Fitzharris, Grade 4 teacher writes:

Both classes of our 4th graders toured the Idaho State Capitol before spring break and had a “meet and greet” with Governor Butch Otter. We are in the midst of our unit on migration and Idaho History. The students visited with Governor Otter for about half an hour and asked lots of questions. We also watched the videos on the history of the Capitol building. It was great visit!

Kindergarten Student Initiates Japan Fundraiser

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

She may only be in kindergarten, but Parker B is showing her support for the people of Japan in the wake of the recent earthquake and tsunami. Read more in the Idaho Statesman about the fundraiser she initiated last week at the College of Idaho.

Parker and her family were also the featured Seven’s Heroes on Channel 7 KTVB news. Watch the video here.

Riverstone has hosted several Japanese international students in recent years and we send our very best wishes to their families and the entire country. Plans are in the works to raise funds for tsunami relief at Riverstone after spring break. Watch for details soon.

International Espionage

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Riverstone’s annual auction, International Espionage, proved to be another wonderful celebration of our school! With lots of 007-inspired attire, the Riverstone community showed their support with their enthusiasm and generosity. We were thrilled to reach our goal of funding new science facilities for our preschool through grade 12 students!

Thank you to our auction donors and attendees. Special thanks to our sponsors: IDX Pathology, KeyBank, the Simpson family, the Goltry family, and the Tabb family.

We are also extremely grateful to the entire auction committee, led by the fearless Theresa Eckersell, for their months of planning, hard work, and determination to put on a fabulous event! As you can see, they outdid themselves!

Enjoy some photos from the evening, courtesy of parent Heather Webster.

Idaho Meth Project Campaign Kickoff

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

This past Tuesday, Idaho’s Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, First Lady Lori Otter, and over 150 Riverstone middle and high school students kicked off the latest wave of TV, radio, billboard and online ads from the Idaho Meth Project (IMP) in the Kennedy Gymnasium. Students from Sandpoint, Rigby and Canyon Ridge High Schools joined in via the Idaho Education Network’s video conferencing system.

A small group of Riverstone students in Grades 9 – 11 served on the steering committee for this event; they created and administered a haiku contest that had over 143 entrants from the four schools, assisted the IMP staff in organizing the timeline, and greeted guests and assisted on the day of the event. These students were impressive and did a great job representing themselves and Riverstone. Special thanks to Nicole B (Gr 11), Sierra T (Gr 11), Grace G (Gr 10), Reyeda A (Gr 10), Katherine H (Gr 10), Sarah M (Gr 10), Frikse L (Gr 10), Sarah S (Gr 10), Kristin C (Gr 9), Bayard B (Gr 9).

Congratulations to Madi B (Gr 10) for being selected as Riverstone’s haiku contest winner. Here is her haiku:

“Final Results”
Why lead such a life?
Ravaging body and mind
Killing you inside

MLK Day: Feed the Dream

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

The following information was adapted from the Idaho Foodbank website: In the spirit of volunteerism that is at the heart of Martin Luther King Jr. – Idaho Human Rights Day, hundreds of volunteers, including our Grade 4 students and families,  gathered on Monday, Jan. 17, at The Idaho Foodbank’s Boise warehouse to assemble the food items that are handed out in backpacks to 2,000 Idaho children every week.

The goal of this huge assembly-line process was to “build” 5,000 backpacks. Because for too many Idaho children, Saturday and Sunday are the longest days of the week as they wait for Monday and the school meals they depend on. Backpacks fill that weekend gap.

Kerry Fitzharris, one of our two Grade 4 teachers, explained that, “We packed 1000 bags in about 1 hour and 10 minutes! Each completed bag weighed about six pounds. These bags will now be distributed to teachers in schools, who will put them into the take-home backpacks. The backpacks are then returned to the schools for another refill.”
