Linking the Sistene Chapel to 21st Century Life

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

History teacher, Martha Turner, recently, gave our Grade 9 students an innovative assignment to link 16th century history and art to their 21st century life. Each student was challenged to paint one of the story panels from the Sistine Chapel illustrating the Book of Genesis. For example, the creation of Adam or David slaying Goliath.

As a way of honoring the theme that society can be reflected in art, each of the newly created scenes had to reflect the life, challenges, or issues of 21st century America, while still illustrating the underlying biblical story. Although not an exact reenactment of Michaelangelo building and climbing scaffolding in order to paint, students had the opportunity to experience what it was like to be Michaelangelo on a small scale. Their teacher suspended plywood about three feet off of the floor so that the students had to lie down on their backs and paint their particular biblical story above them while listening to Renaissance music!

As Martha writes, “We got paint EVERYWHERE, but we had a blast doing it.”

Here are comments from two of the Grade 9 students about their paintings:

“The theme from the Bible I chose to paint was God creating the planets. I figured that creation was something that could be easily linked to a modern element, part of our task. In the end, I chose to have God spray-painting the planets onto a brick wall using stencils. Inspiration had come from a Youtube video that another classmate had shown me of an extremely talented guy who had spray painted the planets onto his floor using stencils and layers of various colors. Stenciling and spray painting has become a modern day art and really made my painting urban. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.”

“For the creation of the Modernized Adam and Eve, I thought of how to keep the original idea of Adam and Eve while adding a twist. Adam and Eve are still being banished from the Garden of Eden. The man who is banishing him is God. Yes, he has dreadlocks and bunny slippers. I tried to think about the way people imagine God and do the exact opposite. Both men are shirtless because in the Garden of Eden, there is perfect weather and no skin cancer. Adam and Eve are hippies as they have not yet been introduced to all the 21st century features and materials. I tried to depict that in the painting by making Adam shirtless and Eve in a long flowing skirt. The two are being banished to the real world, which in this case is Hollywood.”

The Value of the IB Diploma Programme in College Admissions

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

College admissions counselors have been visiting Riverstone regularly over the past six weeks, sharing information about their schools while also meeting our students in small groups and individually. As a result, our students can have their questions answered and stand out amongst the large number of applicants that these colleges receive. Riverstone, as a school, also stands out for developing individuals who are well prepared for college and able to contribute to their college community.

Asked why the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is highly regarded, the Admissions Counselor from University of Puget Sound told students, “The IB Diploma Programme is one of the best programs for preparing students for a liberal arts education. Additionally, having to complete projects like writing the Extended Essay enables students to immediately engage with college level curriculum on a meaningful level.”

We appreciate all the counselors who take the time to meet our students and wish them well as they enter their busy time of reviewing and selecting applicants for admissions!

Grades 4 & 5 at McCall Outdoor Science School

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Students in Grades 4 & 5 are at the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) this week. Grade 4 students are experiencing MOSS’ “Geology Rocks!” and “Go With the Flow” modules, which are taught in conjunction with their Riverstone “How the World Works – Ever Changing Earth” transdisciplinary PYP unit. Grade 5 students are exploring MOSS’ “Exploring Ecosystems” and “Awesome Adaptations” modules which will enhance their Riverstone “Sharing the Planet – Survivor Island” PYP transdisciplinary unit.

Students are also designing and conduct their own field ecology “Capstone Project” that will tie their experiences together.

We can’t wait to hear of their adventures! In the meantime, enjoy the photos of our Grade 4 students: everything from searching for macro-invertebrates to checking out bear scratches on a tree to Ms. Fitz telling ghost stories to classroom time! And…a favorite tradition of all MOSS trips…the discovery of bear scat!

Thanks to Heather Webster for sharing! And thanks to MOSS for hosting our students this week.

Visiting Stewart Gallery & Meeting Christel Dillbohner

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Last week, our Grade 11 art students visited Stewart Gallery for a personal visit with artist Christel Dillbohner and an up close look at her installation, Motionless Torrents – Silent Cataracts. Originally from Germany, Christel spoke to the students about her experience as an artist and the process of creating her artwork. She has been an active artist in the United States and Europe since the late 1970′s.

Meeting Christel was a great inspiration for our art students!

More about Christel’s installation at Stewart Gallery and her other exhibits and awards can be found on her website: http://www.dillbohner.de/frames.html.

Thanks to Stewart Gallery, Christel Dillbohner, and art teacher, Jim Harper, for a great field trip!

Grandparents & Grandfriends Day

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Riverstone’s first Grandparents & Grandfriends Day was a success judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces! Thank you to our Grandparents and Grandfriends who joined us from near and far. We even had one grandparent “attend” via SKYPE!

Our Elementary School students outdid themselves during their musical performance, The Colors of Friendship. They showed their guests their classrooms, their work on display in the hallways, and introduced their friends. It was great fun.

If you have a Grandparent or Grandfriend who would like to receive invitations to future events or newsletters, please send their contact information to Rachel Pusch, Director of Admissions and Institutional Advancement.

Thank you to Nancylee Summervill for preparing our students for the performance and Jay Nelson for designing our sign and photo backdrop!

Fall Musical Recital

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Bravo to all of our students who performed at Tuesday evening’s music recital. From our youngest performer in Kindergarten to the seniors in Grade 12, the pride that the students felt as they finished their pieces, was evident from the smiles on their faces. We enjoyed solo performers, duets, and trios, as well as trumpets, violins, pianos, vocals, and more. Thank you everyone for sharing your love of music!

Thanks to Alison Steven and Damon Brown for coordinating this event!

High School Volleyball Season of Firsts

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Written by High School Volleyball Coach, Julie Kissler:

“What a season of firsts! The girls gave it their all this year and for the first time in Riverstone history had a varsity volleyball WIN against Ambrose with game winning scores of 25-10, 25-22, and 15-9! This was such a special year; we were able to celebrate five of our graduating seniors in Riverstone’s first ever Senior Night!

I am so proud of the amount of effort each girl put into each game and it definitely showed. Every player improved so much! As a coach, it was fun to watch not only them grow with their volleyball skills but also to watch their friendships grow! I am proud of each and every single one, and our senior girls contributed so much to the team.

I look forward to what the new season next year brings!”

Getting to Know Our Visitors from Ecuador

Monday, October 17th, 2011

A group of nine students from the coastal region of Ecuador visited Riverstone last week; specifically the Preschool, Elementary, Middle, and High School Spanish classes. Prior to their visit to our school, the group spent three weeks in the United States, learning more about our government, school system, and culture through a variety of school visits in the Treasure Valley. They taught us about Ecuadorian traditions, stories, and their lives. Later in the day, the students were featured at an all-school assembly.

The photos show our Grade 6 students with our visitors drawing Venn diagrams of family structures and hobbies, Grade 7 students watching a skit of typical day in the life of a student, our Grade 8 students teaching the visitors about famous dancers and singers throughout American history, Grade 9 students learning an Ecuadorian soccer chant, and the assembly.

It was a pleasure to host the group for the day. We hope they have a safe return home!
