Our Kindergarten students were in for a real treat yesterday when our international students in Grade 10 visited the Kindergarten classroom. The older students read books that they had written as a class assignment. The Kindergarteners heard about origami, a favorite car, and the adventures of a Russian girl, amongst others. To be honest, I couldn’t tell you who enjoyed themselves more!
Thanks to Jane Kaserman, Jane Pierie, and Kate Cook for organizing this fun activity!

Today was the monthly Passport Club testing day for Elementary School students from Kindergarten through Grade 5! The Passport Club is a sequential geography program for schools that was originally designed in 1994 by an Elementary School teacher from Washington. Its main purpose is to help students learn the world’s countries over the course of their time in Elementary School.
Each student is issued a passport at the start of the school year in which they collect stamps from the various countries to represent their success in learning the information. Our youngest students will learn 40 countries and the seven continents by the end of the school year. Our older students learn the world’s countries plus forty capital cities, the continents, oceans, seas, deserts and mountain ranges. Wow!
Thanks to our Passport Club volunteers who administer the program!

Grade 6 students shared their love of reading with our Grade 1 students at the Book Fair today. The older students helped the younger students shop and make wish lists, shared their recommendations for good books, and then read to the younger the kids. It was great fun watching them together. I don’t know who had more fun!
The Book Fair ends on Friday, December 9 so stop in soon. Online orders may be made from the Scholastic website through Thursday, December 8. All proceeds will benefit the school library and classrooms to enhance the IB curriculum.
Thanks so much to our Book Fair Committee, led by Kristin Barstad, and the many parents who have volunteered their time to ensure that this year’s Book Fair is out of this world! (Sorry…couldn’t resist!)

If you are in grades 6-8 and are intrigued by the question above, you should join Riverstone’s first Middle School Science Bowl team! The team has been meeting weekly with High School Science teacher and team coach, Mark Anderson, to answer questions about physical science, life science, earth science, and math. Students have to be fast and accurate in their answers to questions to maximize their team score.
The team attended a practice competition this past Saturday and tied for second place! They were so excited about the competition that they have plans to meet for extra lunchtime study sessions in order to prepare for the regional competition in February. If your student is interested in joining the team, please contact Mark.
To learn more, visit the Department of Energy website. A special thank you to the Micron Foundation for providing funding for the equipment that is used during the competitions!
By the way…the answer: apple.

Last Friday night offered families three events to enjoy in one fell swoop. Our Parents’ Association hosted a pizza dinner while families previewed the Scholastic Book Fair, both followed by our Annual Variety Show.
Showcasing our community’s talent and creativity, the Variety Show has become a Riverstone tradition. This year, we had first graders who wrote and performed, “Will You Be My Friend?” and fifth graders who wrote and performed, “This Is How You Otter.” We had dancers, musicians, thespians, comedians, and an international student who taught himself to use nunchucks from YouTube videos! Our Senior IB Music Class ended the show with an awesome rendition of “Train in Vain” by The Clash, causing spontaneous dancing to erupt on the sidelines.
The best part of the show, however, was the standing ovation for Music teacher, Alison Steven, who has made this whacky, zany, wonderful tradition one that Riverstone can call all its own.

Despite losses for Riverstone’s girls and boys basketball teams, the games were amazing! Best of luck to our athletes for a successful season!

One of the best ways to help students learn something really well is to ask them to teach someone else. That’s exactly what Science teacher, Dr. Wood, did with her Grade 10 class. Within groups, students were asked to give presentations to our Grade 8 students about the human body’s organs. Slide shows, visual displays, experiments, working models, and verbal quizzes were all part of the fun.
As is often the case, science can get messy. To quote Dr. Wood, we had an episode of heart failure. Don’t miss the last photo!

Last week, we were pleased to welcome the Grade 9 class from the Foothills School of Arts & Sciences! Our visitors joined our Grade 9 students during their Spanish class. Teacher Jami Whitmer had everyone practicing their verb conjugations with a fun game before the students shared a pizza lunch together in our new science lab. Presentations about our Outdoor Education program and our high school were rounded out by a tour of the campus. We really appreciated the chance to get to know our awesome visitors and are glad that they were able to take the time to visit!

During their Heroes Unit of Inquiry, our Grade 3 students explored the qualities of heroes and how our choice of heroes reflects our values. They each read many biographies and stories on MyHero.com before choosing a person for their summative project..someone who inspired them to go out and make a difference in the world. The students wrote speeches, made a timeline, and added other “embellishments” to their frames and costumes for our Gallery of Heroes Open House.
