Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students had a blast last Friday during the first week of the winter portion of their outdoor education, learning to ice skate at Idaho Ice World. Though technically not outdoors, it’s chilly in the rink and students have to dress warmly, including gloves, hats, helmets, and warm jackets. In addition to having time with instructors, students also have time for “free skate.” The balance that students develop on the ice prepares them well for the Nordic skiing experiences that they will encounter in Grades 2 and 3. The students will head up to Ice World three more times this winter.

Grades 2 and 3 kicked off the winter activities portion of the Outdoor Program up at Bogus Basin Nordic Ski School this week. Heather W., a parent accompanying the Grade 3 students, shared these awesome photos with us and remarked that, “Kids did a great job and they seemed to remember a lot from their lessons last year. Beautiful day with some fresh snow from the night before. All in all a great day!”
In lessons run by the Bogus Basin Nordic Ski School, students practice classic as well as skating techniques. Balance is a critical element of all lessons and after the initial teetering stage, students are quickly zipping around on skinny skis. Another significant element of the program is learning how to operate a new set of equipment; students have to get in and out of their boots and skis on their own and learn to manage potentially awkward poles. They also learn about the importance of layering and appropriate clothing choices which are important components of the winter outdoor program activities.
Makes you want to be a kid again, doesn’t it?

The following information was adapted from the Idaho Foodbank website: In the spirit of volunteerism that is at the heart of Martin Luther King Jr. – Idaho Human Rights Day, hundreds of volunteers, including our Grade 4 students and families, gathered on Monday, Jan. 17, at The Idaho Foodbank’s Boise warehouse to assemble the food items that are handed out in backpacks to 2,000 Idaho children every week.
The goal of this huge assembly-line process was to “build” 5,000 backpacks. Because for too many Idaho children, Saturday and Sunday are the longest days of the week as they wait for Monday and the school meals they depend on. Backpacks fill that weekend gap.
Kerry Fitzharris, one of our two Grade 4 teachers, explained that, “We packed 1000 bags in about 1 hour and 10 minutes! Each completed bag weighed about six pounds. These bags will now be distributed to teachers in schools, who will put them into the take-home backpacks. The backpacks are then returned to the schools for another refill.”

The following letter was sent to all parents and staff members at Riverstone. Congratulations, Bob!
Dear Riverstone International School Community Members:
After an extensive global search, I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has selected Bob Carignan as the new Head of School beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. Over the last three years, Bob has served as the High School Director, Director of College Counseling, and Assistant Head of School, and therefore, Bob is uniquely qualified to lead Riverstone through the next phase of growth and development. Bob and Andrew will work closely together over the next six months to ensure that the School has a seamless leadership transition on July 1, 2011.
The search for a new Head of School was highly competitive. The process was lead by John Sims and a committee that included 3 faculty members, 2 current parents, and 3 Trustees. The search process took place during an intense hiring period in the independent school world, and we were fortunate to receive over 40 applications for the position. The committee was thrilled to have had 3 finalists, two of which were ultimately invited to sit for interviews.
Over the last 25 years, Bob has enjoyed a successful and diverse career. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in English and Economics, and pursued a career in the financial world with Cargill. Over the next 15 years, Bob traded financial derivatives for various firms on the Chicago exchange.
In 2000, Bob and his wife, Laurel, moved their family to Boise, Idaho, and Bob decided to follow his lifelong passion and pursue a career in education. He received his Masters in Education from Boise State University in December 2006. He joined Riverstone in 2002, and over the last 9 years, he has made a significant contribution to the success of our School. Bob is a well respected teacher. During his teaching career he taught courses in English, History, and Economics. He played a key role in the development of the School’s English curriculum, and gaining authorized with the IB Organization. Additionally, Bob was instrumental in developing Riverstone’s highly acclaimed college counseling program. Over the years, Bob has provided invaluable advice to our Grade 11 and 12 students, and the resulting admission results and scholarship offers speak for themselves.
In his role as Assistant Head of School, Bob participated in Riverstone’s strategic planning process, and chaired the programs committee which created the plan for our academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. Bob has supported a number of our service learning and outdoor trips, and has a unique ability to understand and mentor Riverstone’s students. Bob has also participated in the National Association of Independent School’s (NAIS) Aspiring Heads Program.
Bob has a clear vision for what Riverstone needs to focus on to achieve the School’s vision as outlined in our strategic plan. He has a strong understanding of the Riverstone culture, and has a proven record of success. He is respected by the students that he teaches, their parents, and the faculty that he works with on a day to day basis.
Personally, I have a high degree of confidence in Bob’s abilities, and his potential to lead Riverstone through the next phase of improvement and growth. Please join me in congratulating Bob on his new role.
I would like to thank John Sims, and the entire search committee for their tireless work in conducting the search process. This is not easy work, but the entire team did a wonderful job, and I am very pleased with the outcome.
Sincerely,
Kurt R. Liebich
President, Board of Trustees

Video conferencing equipment bridged the geographic gap between Boise and Bogotá as our Kindergarten and Grade 8 students met their counterparts who attend Colegio CIEDI in Bogotá, Colombia!
The Grade 8 students from both schools introduced themselves in preparation for their collaborative unit entitled, “The Wolf and the Condor as a Metaphor for Humanity.” The unit will take place in the spring of 2011 and will predominantly involve the subjects of English, Science, and Language B. During the unit, students will collaborate with students of CIEDI, CIEDI students will visit Riverstone, and subsequently, Riverstone students will have the opportunity to visit CIEDI.
The Riverstone Kindergarten students introduced themselves in Spanish and then played the video, “The Best Part of Me” that they created as part of their first Unit of Inquiry, entitled “Common Ground,” that focused on families. The CIEDI Kindergarten students introduced themselves in English, shared their age and favorite colors, and then sang a song. Many of these students “met” last year as preschoolers so this was especially fun for them to continue their friendships!
These international friendships take “International Understanding” to an entirely new level! Many thanks to our International Program Coordinator, Tarrah Elam, our teachers here in Boise, and the teachers from Colegio CIEDI for creating these wonderful opportunities!

Armed with rakes, gloves, and lots of enthusiasm, over 70 Riverstone community members took part in one of Boise’s favorite fall events, Rake Up Boise, last Saturday. Under the stellar direction of one of our Grade 10 students, teams split up around southeast Boise and removed leaves from seven yards in just under three hours!
Have you ever noticed that raking leaves with friends on someone else’s behalf is so much more fun than raking leaves in your own yard?

Elementary, middle, and high school students and staff wore green today to kick off our new environmental awareness program, Shades of Green. Our goal is to decrease our reliance on the earth’s resources while increasing our “shades of green” in as many ways as possible. Students will be measuring lighting levels and reviewing the settings on our automatic thermostats, as well as starting awareness campaigns for the amount of paper consumed in printing and copying, the water used on the lawns, and more. We’ll keep you posted on our progress!

At the start of the school year, Brad Baxter, our Grade 5 teacher, noticed that some of the students were having a hard time sitting in their desk chairs for more than 10 minutes at a time. His research led him to consider using exercise balls instead of desk chairs, because they have been found to not only extend concentration time at a desk, but also promote good posture and core strength. Brad asked the students if they’d like to give the balls a try. The decision was a unanimous yes! After two months of school, the decision continues to be a great one. Concentration on school work has increased and disruptions among the students has decreased. Great thinking Mr. Baxter!

Our Middle School Girls Volleyball team posted their first match win against an “A” or “Varsity” team yesterday afternoon at the Kennedy Gymnasium! The girls played a great match against the tough Compass Aviators and were thrilled to see the results of all their hard work during practices pay off during the match. Kudos to the team!
