Europe Trip….Saturday Update

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

The Riverstone Europe group transcended a few more borders and arrived in Switzerland on Saturday to be greeted by rain!

Dear all,

Finally. Safe and sound in Lausanne. Kids were very excited to see

green grass in the courtyards at the youth hostel and immediately

started juggling a soccer ball that appeared out of nowhere.  Will

walk along Lac Leman this evening.

Europe Trip…Friday Update

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Hi everyone,

We had a wonderful day in Versailles.  Students had the opportunity to wander the palace and gardens for a number of hours, pondering all that has taken place in that very location.  We spoke about the different historical events, people, and celebrations. We finished the day with a nice dinner in Versailles.

Tonight we have a full agenda of LAUNDRY before heading towards Switzerland in the morning.

What a great six days in Paris.

We can’t wait to get a feel for another country, culture and city!

Vivid memories as our time in Paris winds down, and we head on to our next destination…

Remy – hanging out with friends in a cafe in Paris

Sarah – beautiful canals in Amsterdam

Paul – tiny neighborhood of Montmartre

Ryan Sandeen – weinerschnitzel in Amsterdam

Alex Rose – view of Paris from Sacre Coeur cathedral

Coleman – buildings along the canals in Amsterdam

Asher – being back in Amsterdam after 4 years and walking the twisting

alleys

Elena – being face to face with the Van Gogh self-portrait in the Musee

d’Orsay

Chris – the ease of crisscrossing Europe via train. One train ride

three countries!

Tatjana – seeing the Eiffel Tower light up in the early evening and

the quite inside the Notre Dame cathedral

Lydia – the intimate nature of Montmartre and the Sacre Couer.

Dylan – being on top of the Eiffel Tower

Sam – jamming into crowded metros

Maddi – Paris nightlife

Stearne – tiny cups of coffee in the cafes

Reagan – first view of the Eiffel Tower (after coming out of the

Trocadero metro stop)

Ryan g – speaking French with people

Lucas – seeing Paris from the Eiffel Tower

Jon – the relaxed atmosphere of Amsterdam (compared to the hustle

bustle of Paris) and the walkable nature of the city. Calm.

Sara Chu – being able to communicate with people in French. Feeling

more connected to the culture with less of a language barrier

Austin – immense size and beauty and immaculate preservation of Sacre

Coeur.

Had a great evening. After dinner we walked up the hill to Sacre Coeur

and were able to walk through the cathedral and sit down for a while

in silence and marvel at the sheer size and absolute magnificence of

the place. Students couldn’t belive their eyes and Paul and Asher went

back in as the rest of the group marveled at the view of Paris spread

out below. After a quick spin through the streets of Monmarte and “the

best ice cream in the world” we hit the metro and were amazed by how

much Laumiere, our final metro stop at the hotel, has come to feel

like home.

Good luck to the seniors from all of us!  We’re praying for good

weather!

First Annual Riverstone Milk Jug Boat Regatta!

First Annual Riverstone Milk Jug Boat Regatta!

Seventh grade students in MYP Design Technology used the Design Cycle to design and create their own “milk jug boats”.  Their craft were designed to float two 7th graders in a stable fashion, and they calculated the total displacement of their boats to determine how many milk jugs would be required.

Of course, they needed to “evaluate” their designs, so on to Spring Shores, and despite the weather, there was plenty of fun for all!  We would like to extend a special thanks to Meadow Gold Dairy for donating the jugs.

At the Eiffel Tower

At the Eiffel Tower

After a very long travel day yesterday, the group had a later start today. The itinerary involved a walking tour of the Artists’ quarter and Musee d’Orsay.

Here is a quick update from Ben:

Kids loved the Musee d’Orsay…Elena was particularly excited to see

works from some of her favorite artists and I couldn’t pull myself

away from one of the Seurats.  Rain this morning but skies have

cleared and kids are doing a bit of shopping. They are actually in an

internet cafe right now so hopefully parents will hear from their kids soon!

Thought everyone would like to see this pic of us on a bridge over the

Seine. Towers of Notre Dame are in the background.

Will update with pics again soon!

Spring Arts Festival

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

This afternoon, Riverstone held its first Spring Arts Festival in the Elementary School. Parents, grandparents, friends, and faculty enjoyed a wonderful display of student art work and music from all grades, preschool through grade 5.

Riverstone puts a high emphasis on creativity, believing it to be one of the cornerstones for success for our students in a 21st century world. Beyond academic excellence, students need to become flexible, creative thinkers.

Thanks to teachers Damon Brown (Music) and Jay Nelson (Art) for conceiving the idea and organizing the event.

Where extraordinary happens every day……

Anne Frank House

Ann Frank1

From Ben Brock, Outdoor and Athletics Program Director, in Amsterdam:

The Anne Frank House was amazing. Before we visited, our students responded to questions about Anne Frank’s story and how it fits into the larger historical context. The discussion was impressive!

Here is a shot of the kids in front of the Anne Frank House after our tour.

They don’t look too bad considering the 4am start from Paris this morning.

Europe update Wednesday May 26

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

I just heard from the Europe groups. They apologize, but they are having trouble sending photos; they just keep bouncing back!  Hopefully Ben will be able to send some from his iPhone.

Hello everyone,

We have had an incredible first few days in Paris.  From dawn to dusk, we have taken in the scenery, culture and life of the city.  We have visited Notre Dame, La Louvre, Boats of Seine, Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower.  Food has been great, kids have been great, and the weather spectacular. We are planning to have an early morning train ride to Amsterdam in the morning- which will give us a few hours to rest our tired feet!

The energy of the group has been fantastic.  Everyone is up to be part of new experiences and go with the flow.  We are learning the metro system, which has been super fun.  Students were able to guide us through it today!!!  We are coming up with all kinds of ideas for our ‘mini personal’ projects on Transcending Borders-  I can’t wait to see what they make of it.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience this with your kiddos!  They have been a pleasure to be with-

We will update you again in a few days.  Enoy the pictures (if they get through this time).

Transcending Borders MYP unit update

More from the Transcending Borders at Riverstone group….

To quote Ernest Hemingway, “It was always pleasant crossing bridges

in Paris.”  We have beautiful, but cool weather in Boise.  Today, as

part of our attempt to broaden our experiences in Boise, we took a

picture with Mona Lisa U. in our classroom, just before we enjoyed

homemade crepes prepared by Kim H., Katharine’s mom.  They were

unbelievably delicious!  Everybody has continued working diligently

on their projects.  Max, Yaro and Parker were all involved with en

plein aire painting this afternoon.  Mona and Emma continued

developing their script for a love story in which the protagonists

are separated by the Wall, Natania is developing a jigsaw based on

primary source photographs from Northern Ireland and Reyada is

researching Cold War art.  Pictures are attached.

Europe Trip update: Monday May 24

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I just heard from the Europe group. They apologize, but they are too busy and having far too much fun to bother finding an internet cafe to send photos or any updates.

They just got back to their hotel at 10:30pm after a day at the Louvre and the Eiffel tower followed by dinner at a typical Parisian Bistro.

They have promised to send photos tomorrow.

In the meantime, everyone is safe and having a great time…Oh, and all are working hard on their projects.
