The Elementary School Holiday Music performance was a great success! Students had the opportunity to demonstrate many of the qualities that the Riverstone community strives to develop in its students. Creativity and confidence were widely present in the performance. Empathy, tolerance, and respect were also demonstrated by students as they made sure all performers could be seen and heard, helped encourage their peers, and performed music from a wide spectrum of cultures, including songs in another world language. Grade 4 and 5 students performed several songs without background music, because they played it themselves!
Thank you to Mr. Brown, our Elementary School music teacher, for organizing this wonderful production! And thank you to Heather Webster for sharing her photos!

Superheroes and a super selection of books. You can find both this week in our transformed Elementary School atrium. Friday, December 10 is the last day of the book fair so stop in!
Kristin Barstad, our book fair organizer, wrote this email, “My favorite event of the day (no, two favorite events of the day) were in the morning when two kids came in sporting their own origami yoga finger puppets made after reading the book The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and, at the end of the day, when our 6th graders paired up with the kindergarten classes to make wish lists. They took over the “Heroes’ Hideaway” reading area and read books together like old friends. It was a moment of Riverstone magic.”
Many thanks to super-organizer, Kristin Barstad, and her team of super-volunteers who have all outdone themselves.

The strings are tuned and Ms. Maher’s Grade 1 students are back to learning violin this year. The students are getting reacquainted with their “fiddles” and fine-tuning the skills they began last year in Kindergarten! On the program this year? “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” It’s just a small part of the many ways our children experience music at Riverstone. Stop by and listen Wednesday mornings in Ms. Maher’s class from 8:30 – 9:30 AM. Chances are…your ears will direct you to the right classroom.

Whether it’s your child’s first day of preschool or the first day of their senior year, the first day of school is sight unlike any other. New shoes, new backpacks, freshly combed hair, and all those school supplies! Some of the highlights of the day included our Parents’ Association Welcome Coffee, first assemblies in all three divisions, our preschoolers first trip to the library, and Middle School teambuilding exercises. Judging by the looks on the kids’ and teachers’ faces, we’re off to a great start!

Yesterday was a big day for our grade 5 students with their Exhibition in the morning and their Moving Up Ceremony in the afternoon! Parents and elementary school students were entertained and educated as grade 5 students shared what they had learned while tackling the topic, “Celebrating Different Cultures Through Holidays.” Through skits, dances, news broadcasts and more, students taught us about Icelandic Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, Egyptian Day of the Dead, Japanese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, and Bastille Day. To quote Trent K, “It was a lot of hard work! But fun!”
The Exhibition is a culmination of the PYP experience in which students collaborate with others to identify, investigate, and offer solutions to real life issues. This year’s theme was an extension of their collaborative study with students at Colegio CIEDI in Bogotá, Colombia. At the end of the day, grade 5 students celebrated “Moving Up” to Middle School in the fall. Congratulations!
