Today we spent the day exploring Bogota and its history. We also spent a good deal of time learning about indigenous history at the Museum of Gold. This museum is dedicated to preserving and protecting the remaining treasures of Pre-Colombian Colombia. The museum has an astounding array of some of the finest gold metalwork anywhere in the world. Additionally the Colombian government has done a superb job interpreting these artifacts in a way that is accessible and very educational. Many of the things the kids saw and read in the museum reinforced what they had learned when they studied the Mississippian and Anasazi cultures earlier in the semester. Following that visit we visited the church on Montserrate. The city of Bogota is at about 8000′. The church is on an impossibly steep mountain that towers over downtown Bogota. When we stepped off the cable car we were at about 10,000 feet. The views, even on a cloudy and somewhat smoggy day, were wonderful. The group photo was taken from the steps of the church. After this visit we slid back down the mountain on the teleferico (cable car), piled onto the busses and drove down into la Candalaria. This is the oldest part of Bogota and retains much of its original character. The streets are steep and lined with colorful old houses. We visited the Plaza de Bolivar, saw the main cathedral, sat on the steps of the senate and listened as David Palacios gave a brief, but good summary of the form of the Colombian government. Afterwards, we walked back into la Calendaria and visited the Botero Museum. Botero is Colombia’s national artist. His work is fetching upwards of 700,000-800,000 dollars at art auctions. He donated his entire art collection to Colombia. We saw works from Picasso, Renoir, Nolde, Kokoschka, as well as Botero. We finished the trip by grabbing hamburgers at La Corral, a good chain of Colombian hamburger restaurants. All in all, another great day.

Riverstone is excited to anounce the creation of a new MYP unit and international link with Colegio CIEDI in Bogota.
CIEDI is quite similar in philosophy to Riverstone. It is a bilingual IB (PYP, MYP, DP) world school for 500 students situated on the norther edge of Bogota.
The new Grade 8 unit involves student comparing and contrasting the interdependency of humanity and the environment in Bogota and the rain forest with Boise and the Rockies.
The culminating assessment uses the latest technology to simulate real business world projects. Group of 4 students (2 from Boise and 2 from Bogota) will work collaboratively using web 2.0 technology to create a joint presentation.
Following the project, students from Bogota will visit Riverstone, stay with host families, attend classes and take part in the spring outdoor trips.
Student from Boise will have the option to attend classes for a few weeks in Colegio CIEDI in spring. The only cost for this exchange will be the cost of plane ticket.

Riverstone’s international links expand with a partnership with Colegio CIEDI in Bogota.
In addition to developing links with St Denis, France; Shanghai, China and Lima, Peru, Riverstone has now developed strong links with an IB world school in Bogota.
Colegio CIEDI is similar to Riverstone in many ways: It is an IB world school with around 500 students and operates the PYP, MYP and DP programs. It puts a great emphasis on its family/community atmosphere as well as on academic rigor and student achievement. click here for the Colegio CIEDI website
More information about the links with Colegio CIEDI and possibilities for students will appear over the next few days. Please visit again for photos and details.

The group is one the way home! Just one last message from Tarrah and Matt, as they head off to the airport to begin the venture back home.

 At Machu Pichu
Well- how quickly 9 days can go. We have just arrived at Lima airport from Cusco, and are playing the airport waiting game until our 10:30 departure. We have all had a wonderful time, but are also ready to be home. I am sure there will be some specific requests for dinner! The traditional Peruvian food has been delicious, however, I know some students feel like they are liquifying into a soup. I am excited for all of you to hear the many stories your students have to tell. There should not be a lack of conversation at the dinner table for quite some time.
We are excited to see you all tomorrow evening at 5:39 - to be exact!
Tarrah

Tarrah Elam reports that the groups has arrived safely in Lima. Here is the latest update from Tarrah and Matt
|
Hello All_
We have arrived in humid Lima, and are beginning to move out of our groggy states. We are all are doing well and are energized to move on with our day. We had all your positive thoughts with us during our travels, as we were just able to make each connecting flight with the glitches that happen in that industry. We plan to visit the beach this afternoon as well as some markets. There are not many photos to attach at this point, but I plan to send another email this evening that should include a photo or two of your children. Thank you for giving them this incredible opportunity to learn of life outside the boundaries of our country. It will be an education of a lifetime!
Until next time,
Tarrah – Matt and all 13 of you kids!
