Ever since I came to Riverstone in eighth grade, internationalism has played a large role in both the school community as a whole and within my class specifically. My grade has been joined by a fair number of international students over the years, and I have always loved getting to know a new person and a new culture. One of my favorite things to say when friends of mine from outside Riverstone ask about my school is that “I’ve got friends all over the world.” And it’s true. Every time we are joined by someone new, they bring with them their culture, their traditions, and most importantly, a different perspective.

Sometimes it is easy to forget in our everyday lives that we are just a small part of an ever-growing world. The way we view things and the priorities we make might seem strange just a few time zones over. But in a funny way, that is for me the greatest part about Riverstone’s internationalism. Not only does it allow us to meet amazing people and make great friends, but it allows us to think and to produce as if we are not just residents of this one country. Instead, we represent a sort of global perspective. We don’t only think of things the way they are in Boise, but rather how the way things are here fits into context with the way things are in Africa, Europe, Asia, or South America. We’re all working together to map out this world, to both change and preserve it for future generations. Because of our internationalism, this is a responsibility we can take on. And we don’t accept that responsibility because it’s assigned. We accept the responsibility because we want it.

Thanks to Sam B., a Grade 11 student, for writing this blog entry!

This morning Grade 8 students had their first Video Conference with Colegio CIEDI in Bogota. This was designed to be the ice-breaker session in the collaborative project in which students introduced themselves by telling two truths and a lie.
Our student introduced themselves and asked questions in Spanish and French while Colegio CIEDI tested their English skills.
I have to say that I was highly impressed with both sets of students and I am very proud of our Grade 8 students for making such a great effort in both Spanish and French.
Well done everyone!

Riverstone’s Strategic Planning process, 2009 – 2014 got under way with parents’ and faculty information sessions on January 14, 2009. Following invitations by email and newsletter, a steering group was created comprising of board members, staff members, parents and students.

This steering group has met almost weekly since its formation and was responsible for the creation of the whole school survey you received during February and March. Indeed, this survey was completed by 141 students, 102 parents and 21 faculty. Thank you to all of you who took the time to give us such valuable feedback.

As a conclusion to phase 1 of the process, the steering group held feedback sessions for the board on Friday April 3, for parents on Tuesday April 7 and Thursday April 9, and for faculty on Monday April 13. Student feedback sessions are still being planned.

All of this valuable feedback allowed the group to identify a series of “Big Questions” that will become the focus for stage 2 of the process. Over the coming two months, more focussed committees will be formed to examine these questions more closely. Each commitee will be headed by members of the steering group.

If you would like to be part of any of these committees, please contact any member of the steering group listed below. Thank you all for your feedback in making this Strategic PLanning process so inclusive and transparent.

Kurt Liebich board member and parent

Will Northrop board member and parent

Andrew Derry head of school and parent

Michael Bergmann parent

Bob Carignan assistant head of school and parent

Under the leadership of Kim and Mort Hardwick and ably assisted by their dedicated and persistent committee, this year we reached 100% participation on the Annual Fund for the very first time in the school’s history.

Receiving such support from the school community is vital to us in applying for a variety of educational grants.

Thank you to you all for you support!

If you see Kim or Mort or any of their committee members, please do not forget to thank them for all their hard work in reaching this historic milestone. It would not have happened without them, and we would not be in such a strong position for grant writing.
