Our Kindergarten classes finished up their second Unit of Inquiry, Tree of Life, with an Open House in the classroom. They invited parents to come watch the forest of kindergarteners grow, and explain to visitors about tree parts and functions, animals that use trees, and products that come from trees. With the help of Mrs. Summervill, the students wrote a song called The Learning Tree, and performed this for parents as well. The children loved this unit of inquiry!

Sunday, November 13th, 2011There’s Work to Do in Kindergarten
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011Last Thursday, Kindergarten students finished up their fifth Unit of Inquiry, There’s Work to Do, with an open house in the atrium. During the course of this unit, children learned what a community worker is and learned about many different kinds of community workers. For their presentation, each child chose a community worker to represent, painted a backdrop to represent the workplace of their worker, and told visitors to the open house how their community worker contributed to a community. They also shared what learner profile word best described how their community worker acted. Kindergartners were fabulous, and worked hard during this unit. We are so proud of them!

Ever Changing Earth
Monday, October 11th, 2010Kerry Fitzharris, our Grade 4 teacher, writes, “Two weeks ago, our students attended McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS), and worked in study teams to explore the geology behind the formation of Payette Lake. They took part in various erosion activities caused by wind and glaciers. The students reviewed what they knew about the scientific process, and by the end of the week, presented their own hypotheses using tools they had learned how to use throughout the week. We were stunned by the groups’ abilities to synthesize what they’d learned in order to present their findings to the whole group on Friday. This outdoor education trip was the perfect compliment to our PYP Unit of Study, Ever Changing Earth.
Last week, we continued our studies with a field trip to the Foothills Learning Center here in Boise. The students participated in two activities: Crack and Crumble (about erosion, deposition, and weathering) and Exploding Trash Can Volcano (how and why volcanoes occur, and volcanic activity in the Boise area).”
Thanks to our awesome teachers, Mrs. terBorg and Ms. Fitzharris, and our parents who accompanied students on our trip to MOSS and the Foothills Learning Center!

Grade 2: The Human Body
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010Our Grade 2 students have been participating in wonderful presentations as part of their PYP Unit of Inquiry, The Human Body. Early last week, students learned more about the respiratory system from a local physician. Students were amazed to observe and touch a pig’s lung as it was pumped up. They were also very impressed with the implications of smoking as they looked at a lung of a patient who had emphysema. On Wednesday, students were given a presentation on the importance of good nutrition and healthy habits from a pediatrician. They enjoyed creating their own healthy snacks afterward! On Friday, their third presenter focused on neurology and neurosurgery and, amazingly enough, turned our Grade 2 classrooms into an operating room! The students donned surgical caps and practiced repair work on models of spines with authentic surgical tools. Today, our guest presenter discussed the importance of the skeleton. Students lined up to get casts on their arms to understand how casts assist in the healing process of broken bones. Thanks to all our guest presenters! Be sure to stop by the hallway outside of the Grade 2 classrooms to see our students’ wonderful posters of their own human bodies!
Here are some photos from the presentations.

Grade 4 E-Pals with Thailand Students
Friday, September 17th, 2010Recently, one of our families moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand, for a sabbatical and their children are attending Prem International School. Thanks to this connection, the students in Grade 4 at both Riverstone and Prem have become e-pals and are getting to know each other through their emails. They are having great fun writing back and forth, not only staying in touch with their classmate who they miss dearly, but also learning about the kids from Prem who come from Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea.
What a great opportunity to experience international understanding!

ABC’s en Español
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010On Monday, our Grade 7 students stepped in as co-teachers in the Preschool class! The older students read from their books of ABC’s that they had created. Students chose one word to represent the letters of the alphabet and wrote an original definition, in Spanish, and drew illustrations to accompany their written information for each letter. ¡Qué bien!

Grade 5 Exhibition & Moving Up Ceremonies
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010Yesterday was a big day for our grade 5 students with their Exhibition in the morning and their Moving Up Ceremony in the afternoon! Parents and elementary school students were entertained and educated as grade 5 students shared what they had learned while tackling the topic, “Celebrating Different Cultures Through Holidays.” Through skits, dances, news broadcasts and more, students taught us about Icelandic Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, Egyptian Day of the Dead, Japanese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, and Bastille Day. To quote Trent K, “It was a lot of hard work! But fun!”
The Exhibition is a culmination of the PYP experience in which students collaborate with others to identify, investigate, and offer solutions to real life issues. This year’s theme was an extension of their collaborative study with students at Colegio CIEDI in Bogotá, Colombia. At the end of the day, grade 5 students celebrated “Moving Up” to Middle School in the fall. Congratulations!
IB PYP Teacher Training
Friday, January 23rd, 2009As part of our on-going professional development, Riverstone’s Elementary school teachers will be taking part in two days of training on Friday 23rd January and Saturday 24th January.
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) requires far more collaboration from teachers than other programs so that the children get a far more holistic and realistic view of the education. For this to work effectively, teachers need to spend far more time working and planning together.
On Friday, Ben, Lauryn and Andrew along with several parent volunteers will take the Elementary children up to Bogus Basin for a day of tubing as an extension of the Outdoor program.

recent meetings
Thursday, January 15th, 2009Dear friends
It has been a pleasure to see so many of you at our information meetings this week. Our Elementary school open house saw a record turn out to find out more about our Kindergarten and new Pre-Kindergarten classes.
The new Pre-K class will be for children between 3 and 5 years old and will follow the International Baccalaureate PYP program (note that *Riverstone is authorized to offer all the Diploma and Middle Years Programmes and is still a candidate school for the IB Primary Years Program (PYP)). In line with the school’s international mission, the program will be taught bilingually in English and Spanish.
The class will follow the same times as the rest of the school: 8:30am to 3:30pm. New for next year, we will also offer an early drop-off from 7:30am and a late pick-up until 5:30pm This opportunity will be open to all Riverstone parents.
Interest in the program has been high, with several applications coming in within the first 24 hours. If you are interested in finding out more about the new Pre-K program or any of our Elementary school programs, please do not hesitate to contact Rachel Pusch, Director of Admissions at rpusch@riverstoneschool.org, or call 208 424 5000.

Pre-School comes to Riverstone
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009Riverstone International School is proud to announce its new PreSchool program for September 2009.
The new program will be a special and unique opportunity for children and parents in that:
· It will be an integral part of our International Baccalaureate (IB) program and a natural start to our Primary Years Program (PYP)
*Note: *Riverstone is authorized to offer all the Diploma and Middle Years Programmes and is a candidate school for the IB Primary Years Program (PYP).
· It will be a bilingual program (English and Spanish)
· It will be open to 3 and 4 year olds and provide a smooth transition to the rest of Riverstone’s programs
· It will have full-day and half-day possibilities
· It will allow for early drop-off (7:30am) and late pick-up (5:30pm)
The IB PYP program is designed to start at Pre-School with the emphasis on learning and inquiring using the PYP questions through constructive play. Starting at this age and aligning our program with the full IB philosophy at all IB age ranges will help children and parents to understand IB philosophy and pedagogy sooner.
As an International School, we will be putting high emphasis on language acquisition and communication skills through a bilingual approach, for several reasons:
· Benefit to our students in later life, as they work in a more global work place
· Shorter term benefits as we develop more exchange opportunities between schools
· Modern brain and pedagogical research shows that children who grow up bilingually from an early age, develop to be more flexible and adaptable in a variety of subject areas.
The absolute key to developing higher language acquisition in students (to the point of true bilingualism) is the age at which the child acquires the language. All research shows that ‘the earlier, the better’. The key ages are between 0 and 8 years old. With this in mind, most bilingual IB schools, purposely develop Pre-School classes as their starting point.
Our plan is to monitor the success of the Pre-School language model and then investigate the possibility of continuing this bilingual approach through Elementary school as a flexible dual-language option
You are cordially invited to come and find out more about the new Pre-School program as well as all of our Elementary programs at the Elementary School open house on Tuesday 13th January at 6:30pm
