On Thursday, our Grade 2 students wrapped up six weeks of preparation with two successful presentations of their production of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Over 250 audience members enjoyed this year’s show! The students worked extremely hard to memorize their lines and express the emotions of their characters, and the performance was a huge hit with adults and children alike!
One unique characteristic of this project that could only be found at Riverstone was the collaboration between teachers and students from all levels of the school community. Students worked in music class with Mr. Brown to learn and perform an adaptation of Train’s hit song “Hey, Soul Sister,” titled “Hey, Mr. Shakespeare.” In art class, students worked with Mr. Jay to create props, background scenery and character illustrations. Grade 10 and 11 students came with high school art teacher, Mr. Harper, to work with the second graders on creating set designs. It was a fast and furious morning with a lot of paint flying, but the younger and older students worked incredibly well together to create bold, colorful scenes. Grade 9 music students, under the direction of Mrs. Steven, met with the second graders to discuss the play and then created love, funny, evil and sad theme music that ran as the sound track for the play. In the end, teachers and students from all three divisions worked together to help make this production a success!

Last Thursday and Friday evenings, the Broadway Campus was transformed into the Tower of London circa 1485 when our IB Theatre Arts students presented Richard III by William Shakespeare. Given that the cast consisted of only seven actors, our IB Theatre Arts Teacher and Director, Renee Knappenberger, and the cast had to get creative. In true Riverstone style, “docents” toured the audience through vignettes that took place on all three levels of the building and each actor took on several roles within the play. Audience members had the rare experience of being within inches of the actors. Senior Dylan H. gave a chilling portrayal of Richard III as he rose and fell from power. By changing accessories, body language, and vocals, the supporting actors convincingly conveyed the other characters in one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. As one audience member descended the stairs to the basement vault, he commented, “This is one play I will never forget!”
Bravo!

We’re missing one cast member from this final photo who had to quickly leave after the play. Thanks to Debbi W and Davis G for sharing your photos!

“The course of true love never did run smooth”

Having to follow the highly acclaimed Grade 2 performance of Twelfth Night last week, was never going to be easy for the Idaho Shakespeare festival, but they put their best acting foot forward and delighted the crowd with a stunning performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set to a back drop of graffiti art and 1980′s music, the players mesmerized the packed bleachers, receiving a standing ovation from an audience ranging from 3 to 70 years old!

Grade 2 should not be afraid of greatness: Their rendition of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was breathtaking in its brilliance. Complete with all the trimmings of mistaken identities and cross-dressing this performance demonstrated an understanding of Shakespeare’s masterpiece well beyond the usual grade 2 student.
We are all indebted to all the Grade 2 parents for helping the children learn their lines, Stephanie DeMordaunt for the set designs and especially the Grade two teachers, Tina Morgan and Trevor Lindsay for their direction.

Those of you who got to see the Love in Literature 101: Romeo and Juliet production over the weekend, will certainly have a better understanding of what makes Riverstone International School students so special.
This abridged Shakespeare classic was written and Directed by Rachel Cherny as part of her International Baccalaureate Theatre project and involved the considerable talents of Margaret Yang, Mitchell Hayes, Sam Steven, Melinda Quick, Jackson Sheedy, Jessie Sims, Charlie Utting. Scott Learned and Juliana Myhre with music provided by the incomparable Aled Roberts as part of his IB Music project.
It is no exaggeration to say that this was one of the best productions of Romeo and Juliet I have seen in a long time, and for someone who was brought up not 20 miles from Stratford upon Avon, the home of Shakespeare, that is praise indeed.
Congratulations and thanks to all involved, you deserve great success with your IB exams.
