Let’s Go Fly A Kite

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Grade 6 and 7 students learned about wind, kite craftsmanship, and Afghan culture during their last few Design Technology classes. Gudiparan Bazi means Kite Flyer in Afghan and kites were a perfect way for students to begin the Design Tech process for the year.

The creation of the kites proved to be very challenging, but the fact that there was no wind to fly the kites during class was even more challenging!

Presenting the History of Jazz

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Grade 8 music students recently shared their final presentations and performances about Jazz. Students discussed and performed works from throughout the 20th century that represented different styles of Jazz. The performances were the result of each students research into their chosen piece. They used this research to create an engaging presentation for the audience. They also used the results of this research to create an arrangement of their piece that could be performed by the classes. They really got excited about costumes and even wore choir robes to represent one era of Jazz history!

As part of the Middle Years Programme, students in Grades 6-9 are enrolled in a semester each of music and art. Riverstone’s art and music teachers are subject area specialists and, as you can see, do a fantastic job of exciting kids about their subjects!

Riverstone Senior Honored by Distinguished Student Award

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Congratulations to senior Davis G. for being honored as this week’s United Dairyman’s Distinguished Student! Davis was interviewed by KTVB Channel 7 anchor, Doug Petcash, and will appear in Thursday night’s 10 PM broadcast. The interview may be watched on Channel 7′s website within a day or two of the broadcast as well.

Since 2002, Idaho’s dairy farm families began recognizing well-rounded senior students who excel as leaders in academics, athletics, volunteerism and extracurricular activities. Each week throughout the school year, four students from each Idaho market (Southwestern, Eastern, North and South Central) are selected as “Distinguished Student Award” winners. Yearly, four students from the winners are selected as “DSA Students of the Year.” Weekly winners earn their schools a $100 scholarship and yearly winners’ schools receive a $5000 scholarship thanks to each student’s achievement.

To date, Idaho Dairy Farm Families have awarded over a half a million dollars to Idaho’s schools! Learn more by visiting the DSA website.

Physics Is Fun

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Professor Steve Shropshire, a physics teacher at Idaho State University (ISU), gave Middle School students a physics demonstration on the last day of school before the winter break. Professor Shropshire travels around southern Idaho every year to promote physics, thanks to a grant from the ISU College of Arts and Sciences. As you can see, physics is fun!

How’s My Water?

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Grade 7 science students have been studying water quality testing and, as one assessment of their knowledge, were asked to give presentations and teach other students about specific tests that they researched. The presentations included posters, videos, digital displays, and testing demonstrations. After the presentations, students had to answer questions based on what they had learned in their own research and what they learned while listening to the other students’ demonstrations…which is why you see them writing so intently in the photos!

As a guest in the class, I was really impressed by the students’ knowledge of their topic and creative presentations. It was also wonderful seeing our new all-school science lab in action!

Mallus ioeusis and Mallus sylvestris are the genera and species of what common tree?

Monday, December 5th, 2011

If you are in grades 6-8 and are intrigued by the question above, you should join Riverstone’s first Middle School Science Bowl team! The team has been meeting weekly with High School Science teacher and team coach, Mark Anderson, to answer questions about physical science, life science, earth science, and math. Students have to be fast and accurate in their answers to questions to maximize their team score.

The team attended a practice competition this past Saturday and tied for second place! They were so excited about the competition that they have plans to meet for extra lunchtime study sessions in order to prepare for the regional competition in February. If your student is interested in joining the team, please contact Mark.

To learn more, visit the Department of Energy website. A special thank you to the Micron Foundation for providing funding for the equipment that is used during the competitions!

By the way…the answer: apple.

Riverstone Annual Variety Show

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Last Friday night offered families three events to enjoy in one fell swoop. Our Parents’ Association hosted a pizza dinner while families previewed the Scholastic Book Fair, both followed by our Annual Variety Show.

Showcasing our community’s talent and creativity, the Variety Show has become a Riverstone tradition. This year, we had first graders who wrote and performed, “Will You Be My Friend?” and fifth graders who wrote and performed, “This Is How You Otter.” We had dancers, musicians, thespians, comedians, and an international student who taught himself to use nunchucks from YouTube videos! Our Senior IB Music Class ended the show with an awesome rendition of “Train in Vain” by The Clash, causing spontaneous dancing to erupt on the sidelines.

The best part of the show, however, was the standing ovation for Music teacher, Alison Steven, who has made this whacky, zany, wonderful tradition one that Riverstone can call all its own.

Welcome Grade 9 from Foothills School

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Last week, we were pleased to welcome the Grade 9 class from the Foothills School of Arts & Sciences! Our visitors joined our Grade 9 students during their Spanish class. Teacher Jami Whitmer had everyone practicing their verb conjugations with a fun game before the students shared a pizza lunch together in our new science lab. Presentations about our Outdoor Education program and our high school were rounded out by a tour of the campus. We really appreciated the chance to get to know our awesome visitors and are glad that they were able to take the time to visit!

Phase Change

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Our Grade 8 class has been studying the effects of phase change. In order to fully understand the concept, we were assigned the sweet and salty task of creating ice cream. First, we mixed together some secret ingredients, which required a bit of improvisation as a result of not having vanilla (think Mentos mints). We combined the liquid mixture into a small plastic bag and froze it by shaking it inside of a larger bag with ice. We observed the effects of the liquid to solid phase change, and after a few incidents with spills, finally had the chance to enjoy our tasty experiment.

While the taste factor of the experiment certainly made it a winner, we learned quite a lot. First, we realized that plain ice wasn’t fully freezing the ice cream. Our teacher, Mr. Pedersen, suggested that we put a little salt in the ice. We learned that salt lowers the freezing temperature of the ice, causing it to melt into ice cold water, creating a much more efficient freezing material. We learned that improvising sometimes leads to better than expected results. We got to experience through hands on learning the effects of heat (or lack thereof) on phase change.

I guess you could say that watching the ice cream freeze was quite…cool.

Thanks to Grade 8 student, Carter G, for writing this blog entry and taking the photos!

Annual Halloween Parade

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

It was one giant treat getting to see our Elementary students follow their traditional parade route around the school campus on Monday, while Middle and High School students gave them high fives and lots of encouragement. Now that’s a Happy Halloween!
