21st Century Schools of the Future
Riverstone International School has recently been recognized by the Council of International Schools (CIS) as a forward thinking school that embraces preparing students with the skills and attitudes necessary to succeed in the the 21st century. The credit for this recognition goes to our teachers and staff who have been instrumental in developing and implementing these new meaningful and relevant programs for our students.
The following is an excerpt of their recent newsletter. You may also download the entire newsletter if you wish.
"CIS is an active member of the US National Association of Independent Schools' Commission on Accreditation which has as one of its tasks the following: The Commission is seeking new approaches to conceptualizing independent school accreditation that will sustain a peer-driven accountability and an improvement program that will serve well as a catalyst to create 'Schools of the Future.'
The Schools of the Future committee has done research into what students need to know and be able to do for success in college, career, and citizenship. Some of this research has been a filtering process of the huge amount of data and opinion that has been made available during the past decade. The result of this research is a whitepaper (in electronic format, of course) which will be made available to CIS schools sometime this winter. Part of the whitepaper identifies successful schools or those with forward looking programs that embrace essential capacities for the 21st century. Two CIS schools have been recognized and are mentioned in the whitepaper:
The International School of Brussels provides a technology-rich learning environment through a comprehensive approach called Teaching and Learning with Technology. Every child, from ages 2 1/2 to 19, is provided with access to age appropriate technologies. Technology, used as a tool for learning rather than a subject in itself, is fully integrated into the curriculum. Every ISB student, from Grades 3 - 6 has access to a 'Tablet PC.' These student tablets reside in the classroom for daily use and are charged overnight. Personal tablets are provided to students in Grades 7 - 12 for use in school and at home.
Also cited in the whitepaper is the Riverstone International School, Boise, Idaho, a very new school to the CIS membership. Electronic collaborative learning is a 21st century feature at Riverstone. For example, an eighth grade unit joins pairs of students from Boise and Bogota, Colombia to study the interdependence of humanity and the environment using the wolf and the condor as metaphors. Teachers in the two countries collaborate through videoconferencing and use it to structure the project. Students must work together as a team across barriers of space, time, culture, and language to produce an outcome. The culmination involves a videoconference presentation to the families of the teams and requires conversing both in English and Spanish to present and explain the results of the project."
The Council of International Schools is the premier organization in International Education for the accreditation of schools and Best Practice development. CIS is a not-for-profit organization of a truly worldwide international educational community comprising over 650 member schools and 450 colleges/universities. It has experience of K–12 education in more than 100 countries and many of the Council's Officers and Consultants are former heads of international schools.
The central purpose of CIS is to enable member organizations to achieve and deliver the highest standards in International Education and continually improve the outcome of student learning. www.cois.org
