2009 Spring Trips Return

Friday, May 15th, 2009

The first of Middle and Upper School Spring Trips have returned, and reports from the last groups to arrive back at trailheads and takeouts are making their way back to Riverstone.  So far, all signs point to successful trips!

Weather this year has apparently presented unique challenges, and rewards; wind, sleet, snow, and snow on some trips have tested students preparation and grit, while other trips have been treated to calm, sunny and warm skies.  In the past week, students in grades 6 -10 have spent a combined 560 days (!) in the field It is always great to welcome our students back from all corners of the west and it will be wonderful hearing stories in the coming week.

Big wins for Riverstone goalkeepers!

Goalies Olyad Debo, Ian Rice and Jon Frizzell all contributed great performances this week in big games for the Riverstone soccer program.  On Tuesday, April 7 Ian Rice and Jon Frizzell combined to limit a much bigger and physical Sons of Wellington team to four goals, ensuring that Steven Egeler and Ian Cherny’s combined 5 goals were good enough for the win.  Outweighed by 30 pounds, but refusing to give up his ground, Ian Rice withstood several collisions with hard-charging Wellington forwards.  Jon Frizzell stepped in to give Ian a chance to gather himself after a particularly hard hit and then supported the team on the field, coming close to scoring a few goals of his own from the midfield position.  On Wednesday, April 8, 7th grader Olyad Debo had his first shut-out performance for the Middle School Otters.  The 3-0 shut-out performance was particularly impressive considering that it included a penalty shot save in the second half.  Appropriately, when the final whistle blew, it was with the ball in Olyad’s hands.

Congratulations to all three of Riverstone’s netminders!

Senior Winter Trips – Powder, Sun and Fun!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

The Class of 2009 was treated to perfect winter weather on their annual Senior Trip to the Boulders and Sawtooths last week.  Scott Learned and Gemma Utting lead a group to Boulder Yurt, while Ben Brock and Hortense Everett took a group to Fishhook Yurt near Redfish Lake.  After a week of trial exams in preparation for their IB exams in May, the seniors were ready for a change of pace; during the trip, seniors practiced locating avalanche beacons, built and slept in snow caves (even as the mercury dipped to -2 degrees!) and laid some tracks in some of the nicest snow we’ve had all winter.  Batteries recharged, the seniors head into their final high school quarter with a set of great memories.  Check out some of the pictures HERE!
