Preschool
The Preschool Foundation Years at Riverstone combines the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) with Spanish-English dual language education in a small, nurturing classroom environment. Under the guidance of early childhood professionals, children spend at least 50% of the day engaged in Spanish language learning, and 50% in English language learning, allowing them to capitalize on their natural ability to acquire a second language.
The Preschool program is designed for children who are three and four years of age. Children should be three years of age by September 1st of the year of entry and fully toilet trained. Developmental considerations and appropriately designed challenges form the basis of the curriculum, which centers on four themes:
  • Who We Are
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How the World Works
  • Sharing the Planet
Preschool learning constructs the educational platform on which a student's future skills are built and prepares them for entry into elementary school. Listening, oral expression, positive attitudes toward the written word, and experiences with early pre-reading and writing skills are promoted in Language Arts activities. Math is woven throughout the day as children explore the properties of hands-on math manipulatives. The children are provided with opportunities to immerse themselves in mathematical investigations and play-based curriculum like the calendar, weather, snack, and attendance. Children receive music and physical education instruction weekly from subject specialists; technology is also incorporated.

In addition to academic and social development, children are active throughout the day in ways that promote physical development. The climbing structure and outdoor areas provide opportunities for ball play and running around, engaging large muscle groups. Small muscle groups and hand-eye coordination are strengthened through use of manipulatives, art materials, and writing implements.
One of the unique aspects of the Foundation Years program is that the preschool class is part of the larger Riverstone community. Preschool students participate in elementary school assemblies and are often partnered with older students in fun, age appropriate activities like singing or reading together. These partnerships create invaluable opportunities for students to form relationships within the school community, further enhancing their preschool experience.
