Khamta was born and raised in Savanhnake, Laos, and moved to Long Island, New York in 1980. Shortly after, he moved to Louisiana for a year to work in landscaping and then moved to California to attend English Second Language (ESL) school to learn how to read, write, and speak English. After graduating from ESL School, he joined the California Conservation Corp. After 2 years there, Khamta moved to Idaho where he has worked as a janitor, housekeeper, production worker, and technician.
