Maya was born and raised in Costa Rica and lived in many different homes and unique places throughout her childhood, including a cattle farm on the Caribbean coast. Later in her childhood, her parents moved to a small spice farm in the middle of the jungle, where her and her siblings were homeschooled, had no electricity, and lived a very simple life. They grew vanilla and welcomed many tourists to their small, unique farm along the shores of the Savegre River. They had a pet toucan, explored unique waterfalls, and floated on inner tubes down the rapids. They also protected many acres of forest and saw lots of wild animals on a daily basis. Maya is a native English and Spanish speaker and graduated from an international highschool in Costa Rica. She worked with Costa Rica Outward Bound School for two years and then went on to study Bilingual Preschool Education and Physical Education, earning two Bachelor’s degrees. She has taught for more than 15 years. Maya moved to Boise in 2018 with her then-two-year-old son. They enjoy life with her boyfriend, his daughter, and their dog and cat. They enjoy camping, hiking, and traveling together.
