Our Grade 10 students have been working on a cross-curricular unit on visual thinking. Gretchen Arguedas, their teacher, asked the students to map out “cause and effect” for the plot of Midnight’s Children, a book by Salman Rushdie about India’s transition from British colonialism to independence.

According to Gretchen, Midnight’s Children is such a dense and complicated book, it’s fun to break down the concepts into a simple “map.” This assignment helps her assess if the students have a solid understanding of the plot, but also whether they have a sophisticated understanding of the implications of the novel.

From the looks on the students’ faces, I am guessing that they think it’s fun too.
