The Main Salmon: Grade 7 Classroom for Five Days

On the school’s inaugural Main Salmon River trip, Grade 7 students, along with three older student leaders, got up-close views of the effects of wildfires and even floated past a few smoldering stumps that had burned in the Mustang Complex fire. On the water, many students learned how to row an oarboat and paddle inflatable kayaks; in camp, our older students ran hardshell kayak clinics. Some 7th graders even tried their hand at an Eskimo roll! The evenings included river math, pictograph practice, salmon education and plenty of camp kitchen practice. Some of these outdoor classrooms even had bear tracks running through the middle of them! How cool is that?! Next year, Grade 7 students won’t have it so easy when they find themselves packing their gear from camp to camp in Hell’s Canyon instead of loading the boats up in the morning and floating!

Special thanks to Mackay Wilderness River Trips for outfitting the group with great gear and guides.
