Grade 2 Teacher, Trevor Lindsay, explained their current Unit of Inquiry in a note to parents:

Each of our Units of Inquiry is based around a central idea. It is the big idea, a universal truth of which we gain a deeper understanding by conducting our inquiry. A central idea should be conceptual, engaging, transferable and universal, and we view our entire unit through the lens of it. For this unit, our central idea is, ‘Legacies connect the past to the present and enlighten the future.’ A deeper understanding of this concept is the true goal of our unit. So, while we will build on the enthusiasm created by studying the Ancient Egyptian legacies of mummification, pyramid building, hieroglyphics and others, our true purpose will always be to tie our new found knowledge back to our greater understanding of a legacy in general and our place in the legacy continuum of past, present and future.

Earlier this week, students were mummifying a chicken in class and today they were building pyramids with sugar cubes. Below, students from Mr Burton’s Grade 2 class were writing messages using hieroglyphics during art class with Mr. Nelson.
