“Can’t wait to meet my teachers,” was one student’s Six Word Memoir, after spending the morning experiencing what it is like “across the parking lot” in the Middle School at Riverstone.

To get things rolling, Director of Secondary Education, Alex Ide, asked the students to write down all their burning questions about Middle School. They copied their questions onto giant size Post-It Notes that they then hung on the wall for everyone to see. The plan was to make sure that every single question had been answered by the end of the morning.

Ben Brock, our Outdoor Program Director, got students attention by showing a slide show of the Middle School Outdoor Program trips, starting with a trip to Yellowstone for Grade 6 students. Rafting, backpacking, and building snow caves are just a few of the adventures they have to look forward to as they move into Middle School.

Using the design cycle to create tongue depressor catapults was next up on the agenda. Led by Design Technology and Art teacher, Jim Harper, the students designed, built, tested, and evaluated their catapults. This hands-on activity was a highlight of the day.

And lastly, Andy Johnson, Dean of Faculty and Humanities teacher, challenged the kids to come up with a Six Word Memoir. Consolidating their morning into six words was more difficult than they anticipated! The finale to the morning was a review of the giant Post-It Notes to make sure all those burning questions had been answered.

Overall, it was a great experience for the kids to see Middle School and a few of our staff to get to know their upcoming students!

Check out what the Grade 5 students had to say about their day…in six words.
