Many of us listen to a great musician, whatever our preferred genre, and think, “Wow! I wish I could play like that” imagining that these individuals have some kind of instant super talent that allows them to perform with grace and ease. Not so! In fact, if you were at the Riverstone Fall Recital on Monday, October 18, you would have heard the seeds from which such greatness grows. We heard two preschool students who have made the start on a journey of discipline, frustration, and joy that leads, if not to the world stage, then to many occasions that bring people together, expressing the inexpressible. Additionally, our creative and risk-taking students performed the pieces that challenge and excite them, overcoming nerves to share their gift and bringing together the broad range of time, place, and culture in the universal language of music. The opportunity to see students from the three divisions drawn together, supporting and encouraging one another, inspiring and humbling the listeners, is not one we get every day. Watch out for it!
The next performing arts opportunity for community-building will be at the Variety Show on Friday December 3. I hope to see you there. Submitted by Alison Steven, MS and HS Music Teacher
