Students in Grades 3 and 5-11 were treated to a rollicking presentation by Christopher Swain, a self-professed “crazy dude” who, in the name of clean water awareness, has swam the length of the Colombia River, the Hudson River, and Lake Champlain. Swain is currently swimming the eastern Atlantic seaboard from Canada to Washington D.C.

Focusing on his 1200+ mile journey from Columbia Lake in British Columbia, where he could drink the water that he swam in, to the mouth of the Columbia, 12 miles out in the Pacific Ocean, Swain illustrated sources of water pollution, effects that development has had on wildlife and culture, and challenges that the river and all sources of fresh water face in the future. Explaining that he “fell in love with a river, and love can make you do crazy things,” Swain encouraged kids to act out for the things and places that they love.

A group of students from Timberline High School also attended the presentation with their teacher, Dick Jordan, who helped secure funding to bring Swain to Idaho. Thanks to Christopher Swain and Dick Jordan for bringing this presentation to our students!
